What Is AEO?

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of making your content easy for AI systems like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews to find, understand, trust and cite when they answer a question.

SEO competes for a position in a list of links.

AEO competes for a place inside the answer itself, ideally with your brand name and a link attached.

The definition is the easy part.

The harder part is accepting that AEO asks you to publish content clear enough to be lifted off your page and used somewhere you do not control.

What does AEO stand for?

And, what counts as an answer engine?

AEO stands for answer engine optimization.

An answer engine is any system that responds to a question with a written answer instead of a page of results: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, and voice assistants like Siri and Alexa.

A search engine retrieves documents and ranks them.

An answer engine:

  • Retrieves documents
  • Pulls passages from several of them
  • Writes a response

Your page stops being the destination by default and becomes raw material.

You will also see GEO (generative engine optimization) and LLMO used for nearly the same work.

How is answer engine optimization different from SEO?

SEO aims to rank a page and earn the click.

AEO aims to get your content selected, summarized and attributed inside an AI-generated answer, whether or not anyone clicks.

Table 01 / SEO vs AEO

How SEO and answer engine optimization (AEO) differ
Dimension SEO AEO
Unit of competition The page The passage
Win condition Ranking position and click Mention or citation in the answer
Query shape Short keyword strings Full conversational questions
Main signals Relevance, links, technical health Extractability, clarity, authority, consistency across sources
Measurement Rankings, impressions, CTR Citations, brand mentions, AI referral traffic
Where you compete Your site Your site plus LinkedIn, Reddit, YouTube, reviews and press

Why does AEO matter for businesses right now?

Because more research now ends inside the answer. Data shows AI Overviews cutting the click-through rate of the position-one result by 58%. And, 42% of CRM software buyers used AI search during their evaluation. There's also a prediction that there will be 25% drop in traditional search volume by 2026.

People who click through from an AI answer have already compared options and settled basic objections.

How much better they convert depends on who you ask:

  • Opollo’s 2026 AI Search Benchmark Report, covering 312 B2B tech firms, measured 14.2% conversion for AI-referred visitors against 2.8% for Google organic, roughly 5x.
  • HubSpot says leads from its own AEO program convert about 3x better.
  • A study by Lutz Finger and his Cornell students, found AI traffic converting up to 9x better.

How do answer engines choose which sources to cite?

Nobody outside the model companies knows the exact criteria, and they shift often. The published guidance does agree on the next conditions:

It can be found

Crawlers reach the page, the key content sits in the HTML rather than behind scripts, tabs or pop-ups, and the page loads fast.

It can be extracted

The answer sits directly under a heading that matches the question, in a paragraph that makes sense on its own.

It can be trusted

There is a named author, a visible update date, cited sources and structured data describing the page.

It is corroborated

The same claims about your brand appear on sources the models already rely on:

  • LinkedIn
  • Reddit
  • Review sites
  • Industry publications
  • YouTube

What does AEO-ready content look like?

It looks like a page written by someone who expects to be quoted out of context and has planned for it.

Answer first

The direct answer to the main question in the first 40 to 60 words, and the answer to each sub-question at the top of its section.

Question-shaped headings

H2s phrased the way people actually ask, which tends to be longer and more specific than a keyword.

Self-contained sections

Each section should survive being read alone.

Structure where it helps

Tables for comparisons, numbered steps for processes, short paragraphs everywhere else.

Schema markup

Article, FAQPage, HowTo or Product, matched to what the page really is + Person schema connecting the author to their LinkedIn profile.

Named sources for every statistic

An unsourced number is harder for a model to trust, and so is a page full of them.

Visible freshness

An updated date on the page and in the schema, with real updates behind it.

Does AEO always increase traffic?

No.

When an answer engine resolves a question on the spot, the user may never click.

A well-executed AEO page can raise your visibility and lower your sessions at the same time.

Some pages exist to capture demand:

  • Comparisons
  • Pricing
  • Service pages
  • Anything close to a decision

Others exist to resolve a question and put your name next to the answer.

Decide which role a page plays before optimizing it.

A definition post and a service page should not be judged by the same traffic number.

How do you measure answer engine optimization?

Start with the traffic you can see.

In GA4, segment referral sessions from:

  • chatgpt.com
  • perplexity.ai
  • gemini.google.com
  • copilot.microsoft.com
  • claude.ai

Add citation tracking when the budget allows

AEO tools can run a fixed set of prompts across answer engines and report how often your brand is mentioned, cited and compared with competitors.

Where should a business start with AEO?

Start with the pages you already have. New content comes later.

Fix the foundation

Confirm your important pages are crawlable, indexed and fast. AEO inherits every technical SEO problem you have.

Pick 10 to 20 priority questions

Pull them from sales calls, support tickets, site search and the “People also ask” boxes for your core terms.

Test the questions in the engines

Run each question through ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google. Note who gets cited, where you are missing and where you are described wrong.

Restructure your strongest pages

Add direct answers under question headings, tighten sections, add schema, author and dates. Pages that already rank are the fastest wins.

Publish what only you can publish

Original data, real process detail and opinions with reasons behind them.

Show up off-site

Answer questions on LinkedIn and relevant communities, and pursue mentions on sites the engines already cite.

Frequently asked questions about answer engine optimization

Is AEO the same as GEO?

Mostly. GEO (generative engine optimization) emphasizes how large language models synthesize and attribute content, while AEO is the broader term for appearing in any AI-generated answer. The tactics overlap almost completely.

Will AEO replace SEO?

No. AI answer engines draw heavily on pages that already rank well in organic search, so SEO remains the foundation. AEO adds a second goal: being cited inside the answer, not only listed below it.

How long does AEO take to show results?

Restructuring pages that already rank can show citation movement within weeks. New pages take longer, because they need to be indexed and earn trust first, the same as in SEO.

Yes, as authority signals. Mentions on sources that answer engines already cite tend to matter more than link volume, so quality and relevance outweigh quantity.

Can small businesses compete in AEO?

Yes. Answer engines cite sources that are clear, credible and consistent, not the biggest advertisers. A focused business with deep expertise and well-structured content can be cited ahead of a larger brand that has not adapted.

A search where the user gets the answer directly from the results page or AI response and never visits a website. AEO is largely about being visible in those moments.
